Congratulations to the New Zealand teams for doing so well (it was a clean sweep!) at the Australasian Firefighters Championship in Carterton from 17-19 November with Matamata taking out first place overall.
Hosted by the UFBA in conjunction with the Carterton Volunteer Fire Brigade, 21 teams from around New Zealand, across Australia and Fiji competed at this biennial event over two days of intense competition.
The Firefighters Championship provides a highly competitive environment that supports the development and maintenance of operational firefighting skills in a realistic and challenging way. The events are designed to simulate a potential scenario that firefighters may encounter with an emphasis on teamwork and camaraderie.
UFBA Stakeholder Manager Ceara Owen-Perry says the knowledge and skills the teams gained from competing at the Championships and watching other teams compete will now benefit their local communities at real-life emergencies.
Championships a resounding success
Bryan Styles from the Carterton Host Organising Committee says the Championships were a big success and Carterton loved hosting all the teams.
“The Championships really enhanced the relationship between Australia and New Zealand,” he says.
“Fiji enjoyed the event so much they are already arranging funding to attend the next Championships in Tamworth, New South Wales in 2019.
“We very much appreciated the attendance of Fire and Emergency NZ Chief Executive Rhys Jones, Board Deputy Chair Nicola Crauford and National Commander Urban Paul McGill together with UFBA Chief Executive Officer Bill Butzbach.
“Hon Ron Mark from NZ First, Kieran McAnulty from Labour and our local Mayor John Booth also thoroughly enjoyed the competition and seeing the skills of our firefighters.”
New Zealand teams make it a clean sweep
Following their top results at the UFBA National Waterway Challenge in March in Kamo, the UFBA sponsored the Matamata and Rangiora 4-person teams and a combined Ruakaka/Rangiora 2-person team to attend the Australasians.
Three Kiwi teams self-funded their participation including the host brigade Carterton, Silverdale and Kaitangata.
UFBA is proud of the excellent results of the New Zealand teams. Our congratulations to the overall winner and place getters:
