For a number of years now, the UFBA have been working with NZFS with the aim to have Firefighter Combat Challenge funded to the same level as all the other UFBA events. Events Manager Ceara Owen-Perry received confirmation from the UFBA Board on 8 December this year that the New Zealand Fire Service had approved budgets that would allow for Firefighter Combat Challenge to be funded for competitors.
Working through logistics
The UFBA has been holding off opening registration for these events until they could confirm the successful application of funding. Registrations for North and South Island was due to open in mid January but will be delayed slightly until 1 February, while the UFBA Events Team work through the logistics of registration and securing suppliers of accommodation and travel. “There are still some of the normal constraints around funding, so we have to think through the process carefully to ensure that all competitors are funded in a fair and equitable manner without blowing the budget.” Ceara cautions. However, knowing that the Fire Service is supporting the events programme and has recognised that all UFBA events are of equal value, is great news for all of the UFBA’s members.
Rapid rate of growth
The Firefighter Combat Challenge has been our fastest growing Challenge in the last three years, with record numbers competing last season. “The Events Team and Technical Panel have been hard at work, ensuring that this is a quality event and we hope that the funding will encourage more competitors this year. This will not only be good for the Challenge but also for the health and well-being of our member brigades” Ceara Owen-Perry concludes.
Registration information for both Regional and National Combat Challenges will be released in the next week or so once the final details have been confirmed. Regional Combat Challenge registration will open HERE on 1 February.
