The first thing you’ll notice about the new website is the fresh new look and easy navigation, but the primary purpose of the re-design was to make the site more member-centric. The UFBA’s main goal for the project was to strengthen the online community of firefighters and give members easy access to information – not only about the UFBA – but about the latest news and events happening in other brigades and provincial associations.
“When we last updated our site in 2010, we added an online forum to promote information sharing between members,” said George Verry, UFBA Chief Executive Officer. “By adding some new features, we are hoping to continue to build the sense of community for firefighters and brigades.”
The Fire Community section of the website has received a lot of attention, and now features a landing page where members can see at-a-glance news and events from other fire brigades and provincial associations, the latest discussions in the forum, and a listing of featured members.
TOP 5 New Features
1. Brigade News Feed
The brigade newsfeed draws on information from brigade websites hosted through the UFBA’s server. Each time a brigade enters a new news item on their website, it automatically appears in the feed on the Fire Community landing page. Check it out.
2. Brigade Events Feed
Similar to the news feed, any events posted on brigade websites are automatically added to the national event calendar hosted on the UFBA website. Check it out.
3. Member Profiles and Photos
Members now have the opportunity to personalise their profiles with photos. They can also share a little blurb about themselves, and indicate some of their key interests. This feature will continue to be developed, with new features to be announced later this year. Set up your profile.
4. Searchable events listing
To allow members to better plan the dates for their own events, the UFBA has added an events listing page that can be searched and filtered by category. The listing includes all UFBA events, NZFBI events, provincial events, and brigade events from brigade websites. Members not currently using the UFBA Brigade Website Builder will soon be able to add events using an online form. Check it out.
5. Better design for Mobile Devices
Responsive design allows for a better user experience when accessing the website from mobile phones or tablets.
