Message from George Verry, Chief Executive Officer
Fire Services Review - UFBA Consultation Questionnaire
On 27 May, the Government released a discussion document outlining a review of New Zealand’s fire service.
This is the biggest change to the emergency services sector in 40 years and will have a major impact on volunteer brigades (VFB) and rural fire forces (VRFF).
The UFBA is keen to ensure that the powerful, collective views of the Association’s 420 VFB and VRFF members have a significant influence on the decisions to be made.
The discussion document calls for submissions on three possible reform options and details of these are set out in that document which you can download here Fire Services Review Discussion Document (PDF, 1.1MB)
UFBA is committed to making a comprehensive independent submission from a volunteer perspective.
Submissions close on 10 July so we need your VFB/VRFF’s advice by 30 June 2015.
The UFBA has prepared a summary of the main issues for volunteers and asks for your VFB/VRFF’s feedback through a questionnaire which is segmented into questions around:
- Volunteer Relationships
- Support for Volunteers
- Organisational Leadership
- Delivery of Non-Fire Services
UFBA emailed the questionnaire to CFOs of VFB/VRFF on Friday 27 May.
A copy of the questionnaire has also been sent to paid, airport, defence and industrial brigades that are UFBA members.
You can download the questionnaire here
Responses and comments from VFB and VRFF members are crucial and will help us build a rich picture of volunteers’ views and reflect those to the Government.
We urge you to consult with your own VFB/VRFF and complete the questionnaire.
Deadline for Completed Questionnaires
Please complete the questionnaire as soon as possible and not later than Tuesday 30 June 2015.
- Email to firstname.lastname@example.org or
- Fax to 04 237 2680, or

On Friday 5 June, we sent the questionnaire as an online survey to the 4,000 members of UFBA member brigades and fire forces who have signed up to receive UFBA News.
This will give us the responses of volunteers as individuals.
