Introduction of Fixed Term Appointments for Volunteer Chiefs and Deputies
22nd December 2011Mike Hall, New Zealand Fire Service Chief Executive and National Commander, has released to the whole country a letter he wrote to the UFBA on the above proposal.
This letter and the proposition it contains has received preliminary consideration by the management and Board of the UFBA. In general terms, the UFBA is supportive of the concept advanced by the CE/National Commander, but there are a number of areas where further clarification and consideration are required.
UFBA CEO George Verry has held discussions with both Mike Hall and Paul Baxter, the incoming CE/National Commander and confirmed that there will be a full consultation process with the UFBA. In the National Notice put out by Mike Hall, he states “the contents of the letter have been agreed by CEO designate Paul Baxter, and he will pick up the consultation phase indicated in the letter in the new year.”
The letter referred to above is available on Firenet.

This is exactly what is needed to keep a brigade at it’s best. With fixed term appointments the very best person to manage and lead the brigade will be given the opportunity to do so at regular intervals. How often do you see members with excellent leadership ability, experience and the support of the brigade leave altogether due to a lack of any prospect of advancement.
