IYV +10: UFBA and NZFS Celebrate Volunteers
In 2001, the International Year of Volunteers, volunteer firefighters were presented with medals to honour their service to their communities.
The UN has officially designated 2011 as the International Year of Volunteers +10 (IYV +10) and the UFBA - with support from the New Zealand Fire Service Commission - will mark the occasion by once again presenting medals and / or bars to all volunteers who are eligible to receive these awards. These awards are not official UFBA service honours. Applications for the IYV medals are now closed.
Every brigade has received a Chief’s Kit with details on the medals and bars, eligibility criteria, and guidelines for presenting the awards to their members.
The Chief's Kit, along with a media release template and the official IYV +10 logo are available for download at the bottom of this page. For more resources and information on the occasion, click here.
The UFBA is excited to be a part of this project, and is pleased to honour volunteers for the important service they provide to their communities. If you have any questions regarding the International Year of Volunteers +10, eligibility criteria for your brigade members, or presentation of awards, contact jane@ufba.org.nz.

Let recipients know that this is not an official New Zealand honour or award and should not be worn alongside the NZFS LS&GC; Medal or in the position of an NZ award

So how does that place those who wear an official Royal medals ribbon( LSGC,Police,Military etc), with the IYV ribbon also attached?
30 Sep 11
Whoever mounted the ribbons should have known the order of wear http://medals.nzdf.mil.nz/info/orderofwear.html
This shows what order medals are worn in and as the IYV is not a NZ honour or award it has no precedent.

The UFBA handbook March 2001 Section F Pg 16 shows the wearing of the IYV after NZ Honours & LSGC medals but before UFBA service medals. Is this not the case now? Also the UFBA supply a dual ribbon for LSGC/IYV which is purchased at our own cost. I am aware of a couple of cases where this ribbon has been sent back with the medal for 21yr service upgrade but has not been returned as “it is not to be worn”. Is this correct also? If I am to get a 10yr bar for the IYV, do we get a rosette for our ribbon?

As it says in the handbook Royal Awards, Service Honours and Other. IYV is not a Royal nor a service so it must come under other. If the UFBA can decide to issue a medal because it is 10 years since the last one it puts its place into perspective.
As for the ribbon bar the UFBA must have taken it on their own to do that.

Speaking of Ribbon Bars, has any thought been given to the creation of a Ribbon Bar for the 5-Year Medal?
28 Oct 11
There already is a ribbon bar for 5 year & Gold Star. Look on the service, service honours orders link at the top of the page.

@ MotSSO: Cheers for that. I’ve never seen anyone wearing a 5-year ribbon bar, which is why I asked about it.

All this fuss about the wearing of a medal that is significant to the acknowledgement of service to a volunteer organisation. If it is acceptable to wear it and as MotSSO says the wearing of the medal is illustrated in the handbook then so be it I wear mine proudly as do many of my colleagues

Ditto to what Koro says.
The medal is a UN decoration recognising said service and so should be worn proudly.
As for its place in the order of wear of decorations, just follow the official line.

To CHARLIE, I understand your point, but I believe it misses the mark just through interpretation. The royal Warrant for the LSGC says:any unofficial or local long service or good conduct medals for wear in the said Brigade or Service shall not be worn in association with Our New Zealand Fire Brigades Long Service and Good Conduct Medal. This is an official UN sanctioned and issued medal for service. Just like the ones dished out for UN conflicts and wars around the world. Only with a god awful broach at the top which makes it difficult to court mount. The aussies never did that, so why did we? Anyhow thats why the UFBA medals are mounted lower and behind.

Unofficial or local means medals sruck by the local brigade or town before the NZFS 1976 this was a popular way of recognition.
The IYV is not a UN issued medal but an inititive by the NZFS through the UFBA and is not at all like those issued for recognised UN missions. As it was not issued by the Crown it does not fall within the NZ honours system. If you have your LSGC or other royal awards you will find any reputable mounter will not mount the IYV alongside these official ones.

Charlie, sure I have to accept that, so why are we doing it, and why hasn’t someone offical from the government smacked our hands on this? Plus I found this, that seems a little contridictory to what the other official literature states. The last sentance is the confusing part.
The New Zealand Police and the New Zealand Fire Service are Government agencies within a country for which Her Majesty The Queen is the Head of State. Therefore, all awards approved for wear in the official Order of Wear may be worn on Police uniform, Fire Service uniform, and any other official New Zealand agency uniform. A Government agency may stipulate that no medals or ribbons are be worn on their uniform. However, a Government agency may not stipulate that only their own Long Service and Good Conduct Medal be worn on their uniform.
Is this the reason that we wear UFBA service awards at the same time? I would also say that the IYV is a service recognition award rather than a long service award, agree?
So having said that, do you wear your UFBA and IYV medals with the LSGC? Not being nasty about it as you seem a well educated person on this subject, just curious? Cheers.

While we’re on the subject, I see a remit was passed at the last conference for the UFBA to stike a medal for staff involved with the CHCH earthquake. Good initiative I feel. Do you think the government will do SSM for the same event and would it be appropriate? Erebus and Tsunami got one. Huge amount of people involved, and would there be a civilian version and a Govt agency version. Much like the difference in “war like” and “non war like”
07 Jan 12
Re-read the remit on this site rather that the abridged version I saw recently. Not UFBA but asking Govt to do it. My bad. However not sure if the other shakes outside of February need recognition too. Might be asking too much.

Nobody cares how the Fire Service wear their medals so unless somebody from the Honours Secretariat made an official complaint no smacked hands.
A Govt agency ie.the prison service could stipulate that ribbon bars were not to be worn on the daily dress as they may intimidate or be used as a weapon as the little pins are quite sharp.
The Fire Service cannot say you can’t wear your Prison Service LSGC or other LSGC alongside theirs.Or vice a versa as they are Official awards.
I wear my FSLSCG medal along with my Service Medals above my 5year and IYV at Fire Brigade functions but only my LSGC and Service Medals at Anzac Parade.
It is interesting that the UFBA pictures on wearing medals show the UFBA ones worn immediately above the pocket and in the next picture on the pocket flap (not a good look). Can’t they make up their minds.
All medals should be worn abutting one another if in the same row.
A SSM is the same for everybody and if the Govt thinks it is worthy of it why not.

Your thoughts probably indicative of the difference between the Pride issued to us Navy personel and that issued to the Army.
My cat is blacker than yours I also hang my QUEENS COMMENDATION for BRAVERY.
