by Ric Carlyon The venue was perfect, the weather was not. Weekend rain and a bit of a Southerly on the Friday frustrated the organisers, who otherwise had in place superb arrangements and clockwork-like running for the Combat Challenge on Wellington’s waterfront.
On 20 April – a rainy Saturday in the Capital – two of the top-rated Firefighter Combat Challengers in New Zealand, long-time competitor Hayden Kinzett from Whenuapai RNZAF and defending National Champion Chris Bestwick from Te Awamutu, stood at the foot of the six-storey tower preparing for their race. One minute and forty-five seconds later, New Zealand had a new national champion. Kinzett had beaten Bestwick out by five seconds.
