NZFBI Field Day: Behind the Scenes at Refining NZ - NEW DATE!

About Refining NZ

Refining NZ operates New Zealand’s only oil refinery at Marsden Point near Whangarei. The refinery is the nation’s leading supplier of refined petroleum products, and makes many hydrocarbon fuel products for New Zealand from crude oil. The company employs a full time emergency services team, who specialise in Industrial hydrocarbon firefighting.

What to expect

Attendees can expect to recieve hands-on, practical experience with live hydrocarbon firefighting / Class B foam; confined space awareness and rescue; and high-volume water applications. There will also be a bus tour of the facility, which is not normally available to the public.
 

Programme

0845: Guests arrive, assemble by Reception

0900:  Site Induction, Auditorium

0930: Morning tea at the Cafe

1000: Site bus tour, Depart from Café with Peter Owbridge (Refining NZ Pipeline Controller)

1100: Return to Fire Station

1115: Groups rotate between:

  • Live liquid hydrocarbon firefighting with AAM Damian Southorn and SO Turi Fricker     
  • Confined space awareness / rescue with SFF Craig Linton and SFF Brian Weir
  • High-volume water supplies / application with SSO Paul Cowpland and SO Grant Harrington

1415: Debrief and Q&A, Auditorium

1445:  Transfer to Ruakaka Station

1515:    Refreshments

NOTE:  Live fire requires Full Level 2 PPE, and safety glasses. High volume water supplies and Confined space requires Safety boots, hard hat, gloves, overalls, safety glasses.

Registration for the new date has now been re-open. If you did not register for the event before it was resheduled, please REGISTER HERE.  If you registered for the event before it was rescheduled, you'll just need to email christa.lawlor@ufba.org.nz to confirm your attendance on the new date - 22 June.

NZFBI Hybrid Truck and Car Field Day

The Hybrid Field Day is being held by the New Zealand Fire Brigades Institute and hosted by the Waikanae Volunteer Fire Brigade. Firefighters throughout the country are encouraged to attend.

What to Expect

The presentation will feature two cars (Toyota and Honda) and two trucks (Hino and Mitsubishi) with technical experts from the manufacturer giving commentary on each.  A technical expert from the New Zealand Fire Service will also be on hand to cover other aspects firefighters need to know.

Event Programme

0930 – 1000 Arrival and register and morning tea
1000 – 1200 Field day start talk on hybrid cars then fire expert
1200 – 1245 Lunch
1245 - 1445 Talk on hybrid trucks
1445 - Onwards Social time starts, bar opens at 1500 and BBQ

Cost

The cost of the Field Day is $15 (payable by cash direct to the Waikanae Brigade) to cover the cost of morning tea and lunch supplied by the members of the Waikanae Fire Brigade. Bring extra cash for drinks purchased from the bar and BBQ meal afterwards. Participants will need to cover all other expenses such as travel and accommodation.

NZFBI Hybrids Field Day

The NZFBI Hybrid Field Day is being held in conjunction with the Nelson / Marlborough Provincial Association AGM, but firefighters throughout the country are encouraged to attend.  The presentation will feature two cars - a Toyota and a Honda - with technical experts giving commentary on each.  Gary Tomlins, a technical expert from the New Zealand Fire Service, will also be on hand.  Participants will learn about:

Identifying a hybrid
Potential hazards
Emergency procedures
Key components
Cut zones
Flammable liquids
Air bags.

 

Cost

This Field Day is free of charge, but participants will need to cover their own expenses.  There will be a barbecue at the end of the day, which can be paid for on the day of the event.

NZFBI Field Day: Hybrid Vehicle Extrication

REGISTRATION IS NOW CLOSED.

With vehicle extrications, it's important to be prepared for anything. The NZFBI, in conjunction with the South Otago Fire Brigades' Association, are pleased to bring you this Hybrid Vehicle Extrication Field Day with topics to include:

  • Toyota Hybrid with a technical expert
  • Honda Hybrid with a technical expert
  • What to watch out for
  • Protocols for hybrids
  • Hybrid scendarios from overseas
  • MVA options on hybrids
  • Other new technologies

The event will take place on Sunday, 1 April at Dunedin Central Fire Station.  Morning tea will be served at 9:30am and the first session will start at 10am.  The cost is $10 per person, which will be collected on the day.

NZFBI Field Day at Sky City

On 25th and 26th Feb 2011, the NZFBI will hold Field Days at Skycity.  The event is FREE OF CHARGE.  Participants can choose whether they would like to attend on the Saturday or Sunday, but places are limited to 25 per day and will be allocated on a first in, first served basis.  On both days, the event will start at 08:00hrs and end at 17:00hrs.

Attendees will visit the back of house areas not normally seen by the public and get a glimpse of the fire protection systems used onsite at SKYCITY.  To this end there are a few rules that must be followed.

    You must wear fire service uniform
    You must wear the ID badge issued and this is to be returned at end of day
    You must be accompanied by a SKYCITY staff member at all times
    In case of an emergency situation or sounding of evacuation tones you must follow the directions of your host

Morning and afternoon tea are being supplied by BROOKS NZ LTD on Saturday and NOTIFIER on Sunday.
Lunch as well as tea and coffee will be available in the staff cafeteria, tea and coffee is available in the cafeteria.
