April 2011 Message from the President
2nd April 2011What a changing and unpredictable world we live in!
Since my last column there has been a lot of upheaval, tragedy and changes for many members and their families due to the earthquake in Christchurch. As is expected, the Fire Service was there from the beginning, assisting all the affected communities.
Many of the members worked well past the normal call of duty and witnessed a tragedy that we hope will never be repeated. The Japanese disaster also continued the involvement of some of our USAR members and more anxiety for their families.
I have been in the Christchurch area on two occasions since 22nd February — helping out and visiting affected brigades. They all did a tremendous job for their communities even while some of their families, housing, and personal circumstances were completely upended.
Unfortunately, there will be no quick fix for any of this, but support is ongoing. My sincerest sympathy goes to our members who lost family and friends as a result of the quake.
Although the Waterway Challenge at Carterton was postponed, I must acknowledge the work that had been done by the Carterton Brigade in preparation for the event. We all look forward to the rescheduled Challenge in November.
It is pleasing that the Combat Challenge events are being held in March and April, along with the National Drivers Challenge in May. Best of luck to all those competing.
I have had the privilege of presenting three 50-year medals recently: to Gordon Wallis of Lawrence, Brian Vincent of Opunake, and Peter Davies of Pahiatua. What a tremendous service by these three men to their communities!
Remember, be happy and keep safe!
Ian Lindsay, UFBA President
