Gold Star and Life Honorary Members

Hokitika Volunteer Fire Brigade has a number of Gold Star and Life Honorary Members.

The Brigade joined the United Fire Brigade's Association (UFBA) in May 1879. Since then there have been 60 members who have been awarded a UFBA 25 year Gold Star medal. The first member to receive a Gold Star was Gabriel Heinz who served from 1865 until 1903

We have had two members who have been awarded a 50 year medal - John J Wallace (served 1874 to 1928), the first fire fighter in New Zealand to be awarded the honour, and Francis McGregor (served Greymouth VFB 1889 to 1894, Hokitika VFB 1894 to 1942).

As well as Gold Star members, there are a number who have been made Life Honorary members of the Hokitika Volunteer Fire Brigade in recognition of their length of service and contribution to the Brigade - this stands at 13 members, the last of these being awarded in 2013.

All our Gold Star members are awarded Life Honorary membership as well.
