The Picton Volunteer Fire Brigade hosted an NZFBI (New Zealand Fire Brigades’ Institute) field day in late July. The day was chock-full of new and interesting information for participants.
The agenda included a visit and step-by-step detail of the recent marine fire incident in Waikawa Bay; a visit with the Picton oil spill coordinator to look at the equipment available for management and cleanup of spills; and a trip to the timber mill at Shakespeare Bay to look at the processes and risks associated with it.
To top it off, participants toured the the Picton Ferry – including the engine room, the Bridge, the rail deck and other levels – to take a look at fire protection systems and firefighting capabilities on board, and then heard from the New Zealand Police about the double fatality in the boat incident in Waikawa Bay.
The NZFBI thanks Picton Volunteer Fire Brigade for putting on an excellent day.
