Helping those in Australia – a message from the Accord

Like so many of you, we at the Accord – the United Fire Brigades’ Association, NZ Firefighters Welfare Society and NZ Firefighters Credit Union - want to help our neighbours and firefighters in Australia.

We know that there are already a number of agencies providing effective support where it is needed. These agencies are well placed to address the needs of those most affected by the bushfires still burning in Australia. If you wish to make a donation to a specific cause close to your heart, you can consider any of these great organisations here.

The Accord also collectively endorse ‘Operation Rest and Respite’ which aims to give Australian firefighters and their families a place to rest and recover in New Zealand, once they’ve had time to pick up the pieces after the devastation. This initiative is being run by the NZPFU and establishes a database of available second homes and baches throughout New Zealand.

The Welfare Society is willing to offer their network of holiday homes if available. If you are able to support NZPFU’s Operation Rest and Respite you can register your own holiday homes and baches here.

We’ve heard from those on the frontline that what Australia needs most is rain, and lots of it. While none of us have the power to provide this we can offer our solidarity, and eventual support at a later stage. For now, we need to support those on deployment and look after our firefighters on their return home.
