Brigade of the Year 2026 - Celebrating New Zealand's Volunteer Heroes
The crews who show up – any time, every time.
Volunteer fire brigades are at the heart of communities across Aotearoa.
They respond when all kinds of emergencies happen. They help during storms, floods and road accidents. They visit schools, support community events, check on neighbours, and are often the people communities turn to when times are tough.
As part of International Volunteer Year 2026, the UFBA is inviting New Zealanders to nominate their local volunteer fire brigade for Brigade of the Year.
Tell us why your brigade deserves to be recognised.
We're looking for stories that showcase the incredible impact volunteer brigades have on their communities.
Whether it's a crew that always goes above and beyond, a brigade that supports local schools and events, or a team that embodies community spirit, we want to hear about them.
How to Nominate
Complete the online nomination form and tell us:
- Which brigade you are nominating
- Why they are important to you or your community
- What makes them stand out
- Any examples of their impact
You can also upload photos or videos to support your nomination.
Nomination Themes
Your story can focus on one or more of the following:
- Community Engagement - Supporting schools, events, education programmes and local initiatives.
- Outstanding Community Service - Making a difference beyond emergency response.
- Team Spirit - Creating a culture of support, inclusion and community connection.
Prize
The winning brigade for each theme will receive a special prize package for their station, valued at approximately $1,000, along with national recognition as part of International Volunteer Year 2026.
Additional recognition and spot prizes may be awarded throughout the campaign.
