UFBA Driving Positive Change for Members

Issue date:

The UFBA has been working hard to make sure your voice is heard at the highest levels. Recently, we responded to the FENZ Chief Executive’s proposed leadership changes - we stressed the need for a balance between prevention and response, along with a clear strategic focus on personnel, especially volunteers - who have strong connections with their local communities and form the majority of the frontline workforce. The decision document was released yesterday afternoon and is available on the FENZ portal [insert link].

One area we’ve been pushing on your behalf, for over a long period, is a review of the volunteer rank and role. We want a system that’s fair, unifying, and truly fit for purpose. We’re pleased to share that real progress has been made! The next step is your input - Brigade Leaders and UFBA Brigade Reps have been invited to join online forums with the UFBA Chief Executive next week to help fine tune the work done so far.

We will be working with Megan Stifler, the new FENZ DCE Operational Service Delivery & Deputy National Commander, to ensure long-standing volunteer issues are front and centre, including:

Safety, Health & Wellbeing
• Blood screening for cancers
• Better hazard assessment for scrap metal/recycling fires

Training & Skills Recognition
• Recognising workplace first aid training
• Recognising professional driving skills
• Funding for Class 2 licences
• More support for recruit training

Assets & Equipment
• Clearer rules on donated assets
• Bunker coats for natural environment personnel

Uniforms & PPE
• Fit-for-purpose gear for all volunteers, especially women

Our volunteers’ dedication keeps New Zealand communities safe. The UFBA remains committed to ensuring your skills, safety, and service are respected and supported.

If you would like to share any thoughts with the UFBA, we encourage members to contact us through connect@ufba.org.nz so we can make sure your message gets to the right person.
