Family connections in Fire and Emergency

Issue date:

For many people in fire brigades around the country, involvement in Fire and Emergency involves not only community but family connections – whether it’s parent and ‘child’, siblings or extended whānau.

UFBA Director Daryl Sayer is one of those people. “It was a huge honour to present a Gold Star to my younger brother Shaun recently. In a touching impromptu moment, a number of his brigade took the floor and performed a haka in his honour”.

Daryl invited their brother Glenn, who had served approximately seven years in the Foxton and Sumner brigades, to assist with pinning on the medal.

On the previous day, the three brothers joined to compete in a single person hose run in Foxton, to honour Glenn and Shaun who had won local trophies for this in the past.

The brothers have a combined 60 years’ service.
